Horseback riding lessons at Legacy Saddlebreds LLC teach students how to confidently handle a horse in any terrain in the Winston-Salem, North Carolina area. But what many people don’t realize is that horseback riding lessons also have many therapeutic benefits for riders. For example, lessons teach them to be patient and to focus on one task at a time, as well as build confidence through being able to control one’s body and the horse.
The symbiotic relationship between the horse and the rider is especially beneficial for riders with behavioral problems or learning disabilities. Horseback riding lessons offer an alternate medium for working on spatial awareness, hand-eye coordination, sequence planning, and the social element of connection with the horse and other riders.
Using horseback riding lessons in therapy isn’t a new concept. Hippotherapy, which literally translates to treatment with the help of a horse, has been used to treat Autism, Asperger’s, and even cerebral palsy. Although we do not offer hippotherapy at Legacy Saddlebreds LLC, our riders can still experience the therapeutic benefits of regular horseback riding lessons, including increased confidence and spatial awareness.
Horseback riding lessons build skills your child can use for life in addition to the valuable experience of learning how to care for a horse and develop barn skills. Safety is always our first priority when it comes to horseback riding lessons, and we require that all riders are equipped with the proper helmet, boots, and long pants for every lesson. Our riders progress at the discretion of the instructor, although we can work with your child to build on certain skills and offer individual training for show preparation.
